What to expect from your ghostwriter

Updated: Aug 15, 2023

You're ready to write your book--congratulations! Perhaps you need an extra pair of eyes on your project or don't have the time or capacity to sit in front of a computer screen and write your book by yourself. Our team of professional ghostwriters can help you write your book in your voice with minimal disruption to your day-to-day.

When you're ready to take the first step, book a complimentary 30-minute consultation call here: Free 30-Minute Ghostwriting Consultation | In Ink Ghostwriting

Here's how to make the most of your complimentary consultation with your ghostwriter:

Create a task list of what you would like to discuss. That could include asking for help with any of the following:

  • Identify your book's theme, voice, or tone

  • Edit for comprehension and flow

  • Write a book proposal and agent query letters

  • Write a marketing and publicity plan for your book

  • Brainstorm for ideas on how to complete challenging sections of your story

  • Provide constructive feedback on any written material

How to prepare for your consultation

Dos:

  • Be upfront about what you want. Being clear about your goals will help your ghostwriter determine the best way to help your book. For example, tell them what life experiences you want to share if you want a memoir. If you want a business book, let your ghostwriter know your target audience and what you want to achieve with the book.

  • Define the scope of work. Be specific about your goals and expectations. For example, how many words do you want your book to be? What is your budget? When do you want the book to be completed?

  • Be honest. Share any questions or concerns with your ghostwriter as soon as possible. Ghostwriters want to help you meet your goals and will want to know your thoughts.

Don'ts:

  • Don't expect miracles. Though professional writers, ghostwriters are mere mortals and can't perform magic. Be realistic about what a ghostwriter can and cannot do within a given timeframe and scope of work. For example, if you want a book written in a week, be prepared to pay a premium and to be let down--unless your desired book is a three-line haiku, it's impossible to write a full book well in one week.

  • Don't expect ghostwriters to read your mind. Be clear and specific about what you want. For example, if you want the ghostwriter to focus on a particular topic, tell them. If you want them to use a particular tone, let them know.

Following these dos and don'ts can set you up for a successful ghostwriting experience.
